Regular hand hygiene is the most effective way to prevent the spread of microorganisms. Washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer removes or neutralizes transient and resident microbes on the hands, which are a common vehicle for transmitting infections. This step is foundational because it reduces the risk of contaminating the patient, the blood collection equipment, and the healthcare worker during any procedure.

Even when gloves are used, hand hygiene comes first. Gloves act as a barrier, but they can have microscopic defects or become contaminated during removal. Cleaning the hands before putting on gloves and after removing them minimizes the chance that pathogens are transferred to patients or to oneself.

Aseptic technique and glove use are important for specific tasks, but they do not replace the need for hand hygiene. Aseptic technique helps prevent infection during procedures that breach sterile barriers, and gloves provide a protective barrier during procedures like venipuncture. Wearing sterile gloves for dressing changes is related to wound care and sterility concerns specific to that task, not the routine prevention of microorganism spread in phlebotomy.

In short, clean hands first = the strongest, most direct defense against spreading infection in every patient interaction.
